The Hand of the Artist

The Hand of the Artist

Welcome to The Vale

Quality design is about more than beautiful possessions - it’s about those emotional connections everyone makes with the pieces they choose for their home. The Vale designer textiles and wallpapers allow an authentic connection between the artist and the client, for exclusive use in the finest homes.

Imagine if exceptional embroidery and crisp printing by the finest mills could reproduce every stroke of a designer’s pen or brush onto the fabric. This is the essence of The Vale’s approach. Each unique piece is lovingly constructed to show the hand of the artist at work. Best quality linens and jacquards hold each drop of ink exactly as intended. The longevity of the classic designs, partnered with the strength and quality of the fabrics and papers, means these pieces will live alongside you for many years.

Lily Stripe Wallpaper - Pebble

It’s easy to see how this level of quality ensures a hand-finished look for each piece, with sharp lines and rich colour depth. Paired with the softest fabrics and thick, sumptuous, papers the whole collection breathes comfort and character. Texture plays a vital part in the creation of each design, so the quality can be felt as well as seen. None more so than with Tassel Berry, a bespoke sisal grass-cloth backed with premium silver paper and decorated with berry trees and African grey parrots.

By cleverly pairing exquisite natural motifs with the inviting colour-palette of an English garden, The Vale’s first collection brings botanical and geometrical forms to life. The designs are inspired by family walks in Kew Gardens, and it’s clear how this has been translated into the final range. Leafy hues of fern and olive inspire tranquility, while silver-greys and pebble blues add a heritage feel. This Spring, new fabrics feature life-studies of sophisticated florals and foliage rendered in detailed pen drawings. These include the uplifting Lily Stripe, an example of graphic design excellence elevated to an elegant textile.

Delving a little deeper, you discover that three artistic pillars of The Vale designs are fine hand drawing, lavish watercolours and the lost art of Asian marbling. Each technique represents a key element of The Vale’s design philosophy. Hand-drawing represents detail, and the close attention paid to each design and each client. The organic, layered tones of watercolours represent beauty found in nature, which inspires many of The Vale designs.

Marbling is typically used in the Venetian style, but The Vale has taken this a step further. Before the technique reached Europe, it had traveled through Turkey from Asia. The Vale combines this method with a more modern colour-palette to produce something truly unique.

A prime example of this can be seen in the background of the playful Lion Toile design. This modern take on an ancient art form represents The Vale’s twist on the traditional, as well as the designer’s influences from other cultures.

Designer and artist Melinda Marquardt created The Vale as a tribute to the street in Chelsea where she spent her childhood. Inspired by the interiors of townhouses she knew growing up, she designs with the comfortable elegance of South West London in mind.

Today, her fabric and wallpaper designs blend the timeless decorative arts and architecture of our capital with cultural treasures from her global travels. The Vale celebrates the thriving contrasts of the world’s most international city. Each collection will be named after a London street or square, including The Vale’s debut release, The Oakley Collection.

Fabrics and wallpapers are available for purchase on the website, followed by a presentation of the full range at Decorex International in September.
